1. Pick the Right Person.
2. Match the requirements of the job to the abilities of the person.
3. Delegate effectively to the Right Person (teach more people; this enables you delegate more hence frees more useful time for your other activities).
4. Delegate smaller tasks to newer staff to build their confidence & competence.
5. Delegate the Entire job.
6. Delegate clear outcomes (make them measurable: if you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it. EXPLAIN what is to be done, how YOU THINK it should be done, and the reasons for doing the job).
7. Delegate with participation and discussions (invite questions and be open to suggestions).
Delegate in such a way that people walk away feeling like, ‘This is MY job; I own it’
Be clear about EVERYTHING, time, money, people, authority, etc.
Tell people to come back to you only if they have a problem. If they are on schedule and on budget, they do not need to report. You can assume that they have the job under control.
